Illuminate Montgomery
Artist Spotlight: Amber Whatley, MFA
Lighting designer, Professor, Montgomery native.
After building a career illuminating stages and stories around the country, Amber is helping light the way back home.
As the lighting designer for MAP360's newest public art project, Amber is designing a sustainable lighting installation that will transform the mural after dark—creating an experience that extends beyond daylight and invites the community to engage with the artwork around the clock.
The project is made possible through a Meta Community Action Grant, which is helping MAP360 install solar-powered lighting while also introducing local high school students to the world of lighting design through hands-on technical workshops. It's a project that doesn't just illuminate public art—it illuminates creative career pathways for the next generation.
Amber is also the founder of Blackout, a workshop introducing Black youth to lighting design and the creative careers that often happen behind the scenes.
"If you are curious, creative, technical, or just someone who notices how spaces feel, there may be a place for you in this work." -Amber

MAP360 programs
MAP360 believes that community transformation begins with a story.
Not a strategy. Not a plan. A story.
Our programs reflect that.
Catalyzing careers
grants, artist residency, sponsored
gallery exhibitions and more
CONNECTING COMMUNITY
Gathering together in shared
experience to strengthen community
Championing culture
building local and global bridges that foster human affinity,
opportunity and peace
MAP360 believes that when communities own their narratives, they own their futures. And when their stories reach the world, the world is changed by them.
